Open Championship 1872: Prestwick
Young Tom's fourth consecutive victory but, despite having two years to prepare for the championship, the combined forces of Prestwick, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and the R&A, had not got the new trophy (the claret jug) ready. Young Tom was presented only with a gold-plated medal and his name was engraved on the jug for the 1872 championship when the trophy was completed the following year. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
