Open Championship 1870: Prestwick
A third consecutive victory for Young Tom by the massive margin of 12 shots. He started his defence of the title by holing his third shot, a full iron, to the 578 yard first and went on to complete the first round of 12 holes in a record breaking 47 strokes. Two more rounds, each of 51, and Young Tom did what his father had just failed to do in 1863 and won the championship belt outright. A rumour had spread around St Andrews on the Saturday after the championship took place that Young Tom was to be arriving on the train which reached St Andrews about 10 pm (yes, the town had a station then). The result was that ‘a great multitude’ met him from the train and carried him shoulder-high to Mr Leslie’s Golf Hotel where many toasts were drunk. Thanking his friends Tom junior told them he had made up his mind three years ago to become proprietor of the belt. So, there you go, the secret of success: just make up your mind. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
