Clubmakers A W Heron Inverness/Reading PA An inauspicious start, Albert William “Sandy” Heron was born in Peterhead prison in 1898 where his father, James, was a warder. Press mentions of a golfing family suggest he is related to Gilbert and George Heron but, as yet, I’m not sure how. His parents later moved to Laurencekirk. He served his apprenticeship under John McAndrew at the local Cruden Bay course before becoming professional and clubmaker at Inverness in 1920. In 1923 he crossed the Atlantic to become professional at the Berkshire Country Club in Reading, Pennsylvania. He died in Hempstead, New York, in 1959.
