Arbroath Harbour: Herring Curing

Herring were gutted, salted and packed by Arbroath girls for export, largely to Baltic ports.

The fish were sorted into categories: 'matties' were young fish, 'fulls', mature adults and 'spents' were adults which had already spawned.

The barrels which can be seen in the picture were examined by a Fishing Officer who branded each barrel and stencilled it with a crown mark.
