Fishers' dress: Crew of The Cheerful
Source: Arbroath Herald Review of 1992: Margaret King art
This picture, taken in 1923, shows the crew of The Cheerful in Arbroath harbour. They are wearing 'barkit jumpers', tan-coloured canvas smocks so-called from the colour of cutch, a preservative made from the bark of a tropical acacia tree, and used for nets, lines and sails.
Trousers are wide-legged and known locally as 'kersey wool breeks', often, as can been in this picture, held up by braces. A selection of headgear is on view.
