Lifeboat Disaster: Inquiry

Following the Arbroath lifeboat disaster of 26 October 1953 when the lifeboat, Robert Lindsay, was lost with six of its crew, an inquiry into their deaths opened in Dundee Sheriff Court before a jury of seven on 8 December of that year.

These pictures show the arrival of Archibald Smith (Bakie's Erch), the sole survivor of the disaster, at the inquiry.

No member of the crew was found to be at fault, nor was any fault identified on the boat. Adverse conditions alone were responsible.
