Open Championship 1864: Prestwick
In 1864 the winner was awarded prize money for the first time and it was once again Old Tom who claimed the belt and, this year, the prize of £6. 1864 was his last year at Prestwick, he had been enticed back to St Andrews as custodian of the links following the retirement of Alexander Herd. 'It would therefore be with joy and gratitude he would return to take charge of the classic links', trumpeted the perennially parochial St Andrews Citizen which had, 14 years earlier, described his departure, in the manner of an Antarctic expedition, 'Tom departs .... to a place in the vicinity of Ayr called Prestwick where they have links and upon which Tom will likely astonish the natives of those parts'. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
